Marker genes
CA1, SLC26A3, KRT20, GUCA2A, FABP1
Annotation genes
CA1, SLC26A3, KRT20, GUCA2A
Annotation rationales
Colonocytes are mature absorptive epithelial cells of the colonic surface and crypt. Carbonic anhydrase and SLC26A3 support their specialized electrolyte-transport program.
Functional implications
They recover water and electrolytes, metabolize microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids and maintain the physical and biochemical intestinal barrier.
More specific populations
Marker and functional descriptions are atlas annotations. Explore gene expression, trait associations and regulatory elements in the interactive browsers; see the browser guide.
