Marker genes
ATP6V1B1, ATP6V0D2, SLC4A1, CA2, FOXI1, RHCG
Annotation genes
SLC4A1, ATP6V1B1, FOXI1, CA2
Annotation rationales
Type A intercalated cells are acid-secreting collecting-duct epithelial cells with apical vacuolar proton pumps and basolateral chloride–bicarbonate exchange. SLC4A1 distinguishes their acid-secretion polarity.
Functional implications
They excrete protons, reclaim bicarbonate and help restore systemic acid–base balance during acidosis.
