Annotation rationales
Type-A intercalated cells acidify urine via apical V-ATPase. Presence of ATP6V1G3 (V-ATPase subunit) and its accessory ATP6AP2 (prorenin receptor/V-ATPase assembly) defines the pump machinery; CKB supplies ATP buffering for active H⁺ transport; CLCNKB supports basolateral Cl⁻ exit coupled to HCO₃⁻ handling; PTGER3 indicates prostaglandin modulation of acid secretion. Expanded: metabolic/mitochondrial support (COX7B/SLC25A39) underpins sustained proton pumping needed to protect downstream epithelia from acidic loads.
Functional implications
Primary acid secretion unit of distal nephron—drives apical H⁺ extrusion, supports HCO₃⁻ reclamation and final systemic acid–base balance; adjusts activity with local prostaglandins and metabolic state. Practically prevents distal tubular acidosis and preserves luminal pH.
