Marker genes
AQP2, AQP3, EMX1, FXYD4, GAS5-AS1, GSTM3, KRT19, MID1, PCSK1N, PTGER1, RASL11A, RCAN1, TMEM176A, TMEM176B, TPM4
Annotation genes
AQP2, AQP3, FXYD4, PTGER1, RCAN1
Annotation rationales
FXYD4 marks intercalated cells, whereas AQP2/AQP3 are principal-cell water channels. Their co-expression with PTGER1 (PGE₂ receptor) and RCAN1 (calcineurin brake) indicates a known IC–principal transitional phenotype with hormonal responsiveness and cytoskeletal remodeling (TPM4). Expanded: this hybridization supports epithelial plasticity in development/repair to restore appropriate PC:IC ratios after injury.
Functional implications
Plastic interface that reprograms between A-IC and principal states, allowing the collecting-duct epithelium to adapt water/acid–base transport during development or repair; helps restore epithelial composition after injury. Maintains duct homeostasis when cell proportions shift.
