Marker genes
FOXJ1, TPPP3, PIFO, CCDC153, CETN2, TUBB4B
Annotation genes
FOXJ1, TPPP3, PIFO, CETN2
Annotation rationales
Lung multiciliated cells are terminally differentiated airway epithelial cells bearing numerous motile apical cilia. FOXJ1 coordinates the ciliogenesis and motility program.
Functional implications
Their coordinated ciliary beating propels mucus and trapped particles toward the pharynx, providing continuous mechanical clearance of the airways.
