Marker genes
BACH2, CD55, CR2, FCER2, FOXP1, FXYD7, MCTP2, PCDH9, RUBCNL, TCL1A, TSPAN13, VPREB3
Annotation genes
BACH2, CD55, FCER2, FOXP1, TCL1A, VPREB3
Annotation rationales
TCL1A and VPREB3 are classic markers of early naïve/transitional B cells; CR2 (CD21) and FCER2 (CD23) enable complement-dependent antigen capture. BACH2 and FOXP1 act as transcriptional brakes on premature activation, supporting quiescence and repertoire preservation. CD55 contributes complement regulation. This set reflects a retained naïve/transitional pool in the context of expanded ABCs, possibly maintained to ensure repertoire diversity in aging.
Functional implications
Serves as a reservoir of naïve/transitional B cells that maintain immune diversity in aged individuals. By capturing complement-opsonized antigens (CR2/CD21, CD23) they provide input for germinal center seeding when conditions allow. They balance the expansion of antigen-experienced ABCs, ensuring that novel pathogen challenges can still be met despite chronic antigen exposure.
