Marker genes

IGHA1, IGHA2, IRF4, JCHAIN, MZB1, PRDM1, SDC1, TNFRSF17, XBP1

Annotation genes

IGHA1, JCHAIN, PRDM1, SDC1, XBP1

Annotation rationales

PRDM1 (BLIMP-1) enforces plasma identity, and XBP1 expands ER folding machinery for heavy antibody synthesis. MZB1 (in marker set) supports immunoglobulin assembly, while SDC1 anchors plasma cells in stromal niches. JCHAIN couples IgA into dimers for pIgR-mediated transport, and IGHA1 confirms isotype choice. This constellation represents steady-state mucosal plasma cells.

Functional implications

Constitutively supply secretory IgA into mucosal secretions, coating commensals and neutralizing pathogens before they breach epithelial surfaces. This tonic antibody production underpins immune exclusion at the intestinal and respiratory mucosa, preserves tolerance to dietary and microbial antigens, and prevents unnecessary inflammation. In steady-state, these cells ensure a resilient barrier function that adapts dynamically to the local microbiota composition.
