Annotation genes
AGT, ANG, APOD, PPP1R14A
Annotation rationales
AGT (angiotensinogen) and ANG (angiogenin) anchor a classic pericyte “angiocrine” secretome that tunes endothelial proliferation, migration, and permeability. APOD (apolipoprotein D) supports lipid trafficking and antioxidant protection along the capillary wall, stabilizing endothelial membranes. PPP1R14A (CPI-17) inhibits MLCP to modulate myosin light-chain phosphorylation, giving pericytes fine control over contractile tone and thereby shear cues received by endothelium. With anti-adhesive matricellular SPARCL1 in the marker list, the profile fits a trophic, vasoactive pericyte that signals to endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle while shaping the basement membrane niche.
Functional implications
Secretes paracrine factors that set local capillary diameter and barrier tightness, guiding angiogenesis and pruning, and biasing EC behavior toward quiescence or sprouting as needed. By adjusting contractility via PPP1R14A and releasing AGT/ANG, these cells orchestrate perivascular tone, promote endothelial survival, and preserve leakage-resistant microvasculature during remodeling.
