Annotation rationales
Cervical mucus quality and epithelial proliferation are hormone-responsive. A dense mevalonate/sterol pathway (FDPS, MSMO1, NSDHL, DHCR7) provides cholesterol for membranes, oxysterols, and local steroid precursors. HSD17B7 interconverts steroid/sterol intermediates, coupling lipid flux to estrogen/progesterone tone that shapes mucus viscoelasticity and epithelial turnover. FADS1/PNPLA3 suggest remodeling of polyunsaturated lipids that affect prostaglandin pools.
Functional implications
A local sterol/steroid “refinery” that sustains hormone-responsive functions of the cervix: supplies substrates for paracrine estrogen/progestin signaling, supports tight-junction renewal and glycocalyx lipidation, and tunes mucus viscosity for fertility and barrier defense.
