Marker genes

ATF3, CCDC80, CEBPD, EFEMP1, FGF7, IER3, IGFBP5, IGFBP6, NBL1, NFKBIA, RPL7, RPLP0, RPSA, VIM

Annotation genes

ATF3, EFEMP1, FGF7, IGFBP5, IGFBP6, NFKBIA

Annotation rationales

Under epithelial stress, these fibroblasts flip on IEGs (ATF3/IER3/CEBPD) and deploy EFEMP1/CCDC80 to alter matrix pliability. IGFBP5/6 buffer IGF availability; FGF7 (KGF) directly stimulates epithelial proliferation and barrier restoration; NFKBIA tempers NF-κB signaling to avoid chronic inflammation.

Functional implications

Acts as a growth-factor “sponge” and delivery platform: sequesters and doses IGF/FGF to epithelium for orderly restitution while damping cytokine cascades. Preserves barrier function by preventing over-repair and fibrosis.

Marker and functional descriptions are atlas annotations. Explore gene expression, trait associations and regulatory elements in the interactive browsers; see the browser guide.
