Marker genes
HNRNPA1, IFITM3, KRT17, KRT5, KRT6A, NPM1, S100A10, SERBP1, SERPINB5
Annotation genes
IFITM3, KRT17, KRT5, KRT6A, SERPINB5
Annotation rationales
Transitional wound suprabasal cells retain KRT5 while inducing KRT6/17 for migration, and elevate translation/RNA-binding (NPM1/HNRNPA1/SERBP1) to support rapid protein production. IFITM3 adds antiviral fortification; SERPINB5 (maspin) provides anti-protease and adhesion support. S100A10 aids membrane repair and plasminogen activation for matrix remodeling.
Functional implications
Rapidly re-establishes the luminal sheet over denuded areas, providing early anti-viral and anti-protease protection while differentiation proceeds. Couples migration with provisional adhesion to re-seal the mucosa, then transitions toward fully secretory or terminal fates to restore mucociliary defenses.
