Marker genes

KRT19, KRT7, CFTR, SLC4A2, MUC1, SOX9

Annotation genes

CFTR, SLC4A2, MUC1, KRT19

Annotation rationales

Extrahepatic cholangiocytes line the larger bile ducts outside the liver and combine a ductal keratin program with mucin and ion-transport machinery. Their phenotype is adapted to sustained exposure to concentrated bile.

Functional implications

They alkalinize and hydrate bile, provide a protective mucosal barrier and coordinate epithelial repair and inflammatory sensing in the extrahepatic ducts.
