Marker genes
SFTPC, SFTPA1, SFTPB, ABCA3, NAPSA, LPCAT1
Annotation genes
SFTPC, ABCA3, NAPSA, SFTPB
Annotation rationales
Alveolar type II cells are cuboidal secretory epithelial cells defined by surfactant synthesis and storage in lamellar bodies. SFTPC and ABCA3 are highly characteristic of this lineage.
Functional implications
They lower alveolar surface tension through surfactant secretion and serve as facultative progenitors that replace damaged alveolar epithelium.
