Marker genes
AGER, C19orf33, EMP2, FXYD3, GSTP1, HMGB1, MYL12A, MYL12B, MYL6, PPIA, S100A10, SFTA2, TMSB4X
Annotation genes
AGER, EMP2, HMGB1
Annotation rationales
AGER (RAGE) and EMP2 are canonical markers defining alveolar type I cell identity and membrane organization. HMGB1 and SFTA2 contribute to epithelial stress buffering at the air–liquid interface, while MYL6/12 and actin-binding proteins maintain the structural stability required for the extremely thin diffusion surface.
Functional implications
Forms the ultra-thin alveolar gas-exchange barrier, ensuring minimal diffusion distance for O₂ and CO₂ while maintaining mechanical integrity under cyclic stretch. Provides stress buffering and supports surfactant spreading for stable alveolar mechanics.
Marker and functional descriptions are atlas annotations. Explore gene expression, trait associations and regulatory elements in the interactive browsers; see the browser guide.
