Annotation genes
ABCC9, CD36, FABP4, RGS5, THY1
Annotation rationales
RGS5 marks mural/perivascular identity; ABCC9 (KATP SUR2) links ATP/ADP to membrane potential; CD36/FABP4/5 channel lipids into β-oxidation; HIGD1B/CYGB buffer hypoxia/ROS; THY1 supports stromal anchoring. This defines a niche-adapted SMC/pericyte-like metabolic state in resistance beds.
Functional implications
Acts as a “metabosensor” to tune microvascular tone during hypoxia, acidosis, or altered substrate supply: opens KATP to hyperpolarize and dilate, supports endothelial barrier and anti-edema function, clears lipid peroxidation byproducts, and stabilizes capillary flow to protect parenchyma during metabolic stress (exercise, ischemia–reperfusion).
