Annotation genes
BCAN, CNP, CSPG4, CSPG5, GPR37L1, PLLP
Annotation rationales
The annotation genes combine OPC identity and early OL features: CSPG4 (NG2) and CSPG5 mark OPCs; CNP and PLLP indicate nascent oligodendroglial differentiation; BCAN (brevican) and adhesion/synaptic-interaction genes (NLGN3, DNER) support axon sampling. GPR37L1 modulates OL maturation and neuron–glia signaling.
Functional implications
Motile, axon-contacting progenitors that tile white/gray matter, sense neuronal activity, and initiate lineage progression. They proliferate or differentiate depending on local cues, laying the groundwork for new myelin formation during learning or after injury.
