Annotation genes
IFIT3, IRF7, MX1, RSAD2, STAT1
Annotation rationales
Robust type-I IFN response: IRF7 drives ISG induction; STAT1 executes signaling; IFIT3, MX1, and RSAD2 (viperin) inhibit viral replication/assembly; PLSCR1/OAS2-3 amplify RNA sensing. IFITM1 restricts viral entry. Mesothelium is bathed by pericardial/omental fluids—an ideal sentry layer to shield myocardium and adipocytes from cardiotropic and enteric viruses.
Functional implications
Heart: form an epicardial antiviral shield that curtails cardiotropic virus spread into myocardium and alerts resident immune cells through ISG-conditioned chemokines. Adipose: protect visceral fat depots from viral invasion that would otherwise exacerbate adipose inflammation/insulin resistance; promote controlled leukocyte recruitment while maintaining barrier integrity.
