Marker genes

ARG2, ARID5A, BAZ1A, CRIP1, CSRNP1, EFNA1, FOSL1, HLA-E, LDHA, LMNA, MAFF, SERTAD1, SOD2, TRIB1, TRIP10

Annotation genes

ARID5A, HLA-E, LDHA, MAFF, SOD2

Annotation rationales

Under inflammatory/metabolic stress, mTECs switch to glycolysis (LDHA) and boost mitochondrial ROS defense (SOD2) yet sustain antigen display (HLA-E), with ARID5A/MAFF stabilizing immune-gene transcripts and oxidative responses. Chromatin remodelers (BAZ1A) allow rapid reprogramming without losing identity.

Functional implications

Preserves the quality and continuity of antigen presentation during stress, preventing transient tolerance failures. Protects epithelial integrity while allowing cytokine exposure, thereby avoiding autoimmune priming from a disrupted medullary niche.

Marker and functional descriptions are atlas annotations. Explore gene expression, trait associations and regulatory elements in the interactive browsers; see the browser guide.
