Marker genes
ATP6V1B1, ATP6V0D2, SLC26A4, CA2, FOXI1
Annotation genes
SLC26A4, ATP6V1B1, FOXI1, CA2
Annotation rationales
Type B intercalated cells are bicarbonate-secreting collecting-duct epithelial cells with pendrin-mediated apical chloride–bicarbonate exchange. Their transporter polarity is the functional inverse of type A intercalated cells.
Functional implications
They secrete bicarbonate, recover chloride and help correct systemic alkalosis while contributing to salt and volume regulation.
